- Proximity to Major Cities: Many developed coastal regions with strong electricity demand are close to suitable offshore zones. This nearness to load centers reduces transmission losses and costs of delivering power to consumers.

- Visual and Noise Impacts: Siting wind farms offshore reduces opposition from local communities concerned about the visual impacts and noise pollution from onshore turbines.

- Technological Advancements: Turbine designs optimized for marine environments, better foundation technologies and materials, and specialized installation/maintenance vessels are accelerating the growth of offshore wind globally.

Offshore Wind Outlook

The US has only a small amount of offshore wind online but significant investments are now channeled towards developing utility-scale East Coast farms. Federal permitting reforms and state targets totaling over 30 GW by 2030 are accelerating East Coast investments. Other emerging markets opening up are Taiwan, Korea, Vietnam and nations bordering the South China Sea with suitable geography and rising clean energy needs.

Technological learnings accumulated from pioneering offshore markets will drive capital costs down globally. Larger and more efficient turbines combined with floating foundations will help harness offshore wind resources virtually anywhere. With the energy transition gaining urgency worldwide, oceans present a vast untapped source of renewable power that will be increasingly tapped in coming years through further offshore buildouts.
